A Full Mouth Rehabilitation Journey

A Full Mouth Rehabilitation Journey

At Dental Implants and Aesthetics Southport, Dr. Dinos Kountouras has helped many patients regain their confidence through advanced dental treatments. One of his notable cases involved a full mouth rehabilitation journey for a 60-year-old patient looking to restore both function and aesthetics to her smile.

Meet the Patient

Betty's Full Mouth Rehabilitation Journey This patient came to us with a deep desire to bring back the youthful appearance of her smile. Over the years, she had experienced significant wear on her teeth, leading to compromised function and aesthetics. She also had a history of tooth grinding and chronic acid reflux, which had contributed to the severe deterioration of her enamel. Her goal? A fixed, long-lasting solution that looked, and felt natural.

Creating a Personalised Plan

After a thorough consultation, we discussed multiple treatment options. The patient ultimately chose a comprehensive approach:

  • Upper Teeth (Maxilla): Full extraction of dentition followed by the placement of six dental implants to support an upper fixed prosthesis.
  • Lower Teeth (Mandible): A minimally invasive restorative approach using bonded ceramic veneers and tabletop restorations to preserve as much of her natural tooth structure as possible.

The Digital Smile Design Process

One of the most exciting parts of this journey was using cutting-edge digital technology to design and test her new smile before committing to the final restorations. Using digital scans, jaw motion tracking, and 3D imaging, we were able to create a virtual patient—a digital model of her teeth and facial structure. This allowed us to design a smile that complemented her facial features and functioned optimally.

To ensure she loved her new look, we created an intraoral mock-up, a temporary version of her new smile, so that she could experience its look, feel, and function. She was thrilled with the results, which gave us the green light to proceed with the next steps.

Step-by-Step Smile Transformation

  1. Staged Extractions & Temporaries: To maintain function during treatment, we kept three of her natural upper teeth to support a temporary restoration. This allowed her to test the aesthetics and function before the implants were placed.
  2. Implant Placement: Using advanced guided surgery techniques, six implants were strategically placed in the upper jaw. A temporary bridge was immediately attached, meaning she never had to go through a period without teeth.
  3. Final Restorations: After six months of healing, digital impressions were taken to create her permanent implant-supported prosthesis. Her lower teeth were carefully prepared, and custom-made ceramic restorations were bonded to enhance strength and aesthetics.
  4. Precision Fit & Final Adjustments: A 3D-printed trial prosthesis ensured a perfect fit before the final restoration was fabricated. Advanced bite analysis technology refined the occlusion (bite) to prevent future grinding issues.
  5. The Final Result: A stunning, natural-looking smile with optimal function! Betty was also fitted with a custom night guard to protect her new teeth.
