5 Healthy Steps to Prepare for a Tooth Implant Procedure

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. Essentially, a tooth implant is made up of artificial roots made from titanium. Dental implant placement is a professional dental procedure that is used to replace teeth or to form the base for a dental restoration. The dental restoration procedures that implants are used for include individual dental crownssmall bridges or a temporary dental bridge, extensive bridges (which are used to restore all the teeth in one jaw) and removable dentures.

Replacing the root of a missing tooth, whilst being the foundation for a restoration, is the purpose and goal of a tooth implant. A dental implant restoration works just like a normal tooth and here at Dental Implants and Aesthetics in Southport, Queensland, we offer our patients the highest level of care. That’s why we’re here to tell you 5 healthy steps you can follow to prepare for dental implant treatment.

Get a Dental Exam at the Dentist

The first step in a dental implant placement procedure is, of course, to get a dental exam by a professional dental practice like Dental Implants and Aesthetics. A comprehensive dental exam will show if you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. Your dentist will take x-rays and look at your previous medical records. They will also talk you through the process, a treatment plan that is best for you and what to do to properly prepare for this procedure. Here at Dental Implants and Aesthetics, we are dedicated to improving the natural aesthetics of each and every one of our patient’s natural smiles. For this reason, we use our comprehensive experience and skill to perform these delicate procedures with the utmost care and delicacy.

Start a Course of Antibiotics

Before having dental implants fitted, you may need to take a course of antibiotics. Antibiotics basically take on the role of a substitute immune system, so they are needed when a patient is receiving a medical implant or a transplant. For this same reason, patients with chronic conditions must take antibiotics before and after getting dental implants. Your dentist will advise you on whether you need antibiotic before you replace teeth or undergo the process of dental crowns.

Prepare the Body

You will have to fast for 12 hours if you are receiving general anaesthetic for the dental implant procedure. This means that you should eat and drink an ample meal beforehand and ensure you get plenty of rest before and after the procedure. You should also wear loose fitting clothing that is comfortable and non-restrictive.

Prepare the Jaw

Occasionally, if it is found that your jaw cannot anchor the implant properly, your dentist may improve the jaw’s structure before scheduling the rest of the procedure. This may entail a bone graft, reshaping the jaw, removing some bone or removing impacted teeth. Once the jaw heals from this, the rest of the dental implant procedure can be arranged.

Prepare for Recovery Time

Whether you’re receiving a tooth implant from us, a temporary dental bridge or a root canal treatment, you may need to allow for recovery time. Upon completion of the procedure, especially if you were under general anaesthetic, you will need to rest. Some soreness and swelling are to be expected as well, so giving your body a few days off to heal following the procedure is recommended. This also includes things like:

  • Stocking up on soft foods or having somebody cook for you
  • Allowing at least 2 days off from work
  • Getting plenty of rest
  • Taking a break from exercise
  • Arranging for childcare or similar, if necessary
