Traditional dental implants treatment process

Traditionally, dental implant treatment consists of at least three separate steps:

  1. The implant placement

After an initial consultation, x-rays and approval of the treatment plan, your dentist will place the implant fixture and a healing abutment (and sometimes a bone graft) into your jawbone. After this, your mouth requires a healing period between 3 to 6 months. During this time, you are fitted with a temporary denture or bridge. If the area is towards the back of the mouth, it may be left without a provisional.

  2. The provisional restoration placement

After the healing period, your dentist will take an impression of the implant and surrounding teeth and a provisional restoration on the implant will be fabricated. This step in the treatment sequence is important to allow for proper development of the soft tissue around the implant head. This step is often not required for posterior teeth where the scalloping of the gingiva is less pronounced.

  3. The restoration placement

6 to 8 weeks after the placement of the provisional, a final impression will be taken of the implant and the surrounding soft tissues and teeth. Our team will then usually deliver the final restoration within 2 weeks.

With same-day dental implants (tooth in a day), steps 1 and 2 of the above sequence are combined. This means our team can replace a missing tooth on the same day. Using state-of-the-art techniques, you will only have to come in for a single appointment to get your new tooth.

How does same-day teeth treatment work?

Often a patient will come in to see our team with a failing tooth still in the mouth.

The first step is the removal of the tooth and the placement of a dental implant fixture. With an immediate extraction of a tooth and an implant placement, a bone graft is always performed. This ensures best bone healing and gingival profile.

Your dentist will then attach a provisional crown to the implant. The patient thus walks out with a “tooth”.

Same-day dental implant costs

The costs of same-day implant crowns are the same as the prices for traditional dental implants. The treatment simply combines steps 1 and 2 and your dentist performs them on the same day.

You can find out more about the pricing of dental implants and dental implant crowns on our pricing page and on the dental implants and dental implants crown treatment pages.

Same-day implant crowns belong to the major dental category of most private health funds. This means, health funds usually cover a part of the costs. During your consultation, you will receive an itemised treatment plan you can take to your health fund to receive the accurate contribution amounts you will receive.

Are same-day implant crowns suitable for everyone and in every situation?

Your dentist will only be able to place same-day implant teeth in areas of low load and if the bone structure is strong enough to withstand the immediate load.

The area most amenable for this is in the anterior region of the mouth. This means that same-day implant crowns are an ideal option for front teeth. If, for some reason, a same-day implant tooth is not possible as a solution for your case, then a traditional provisional (such as a temporary bridge or partial denture) will be fitted.

Our team aims to ensure none of our patients walks out without a front tooth!
