How does dental implant treatment work?

A dental implant consists of three components:

• The implant (also called fixture) which replaces the root of the tooth
• The abutment which connects the implant to the prosthesis
• The prosthesis which looks like and replaces the missing tooth

Your dental implant treatment can be broken down into three treatment stages.

The Consultation

During your consultation, the dentist will take a series of intra and extra-oral images. This will help identify where the implant will be placed and if you require any soft or hard tissue grafting prior to the implant placement. If your jaw bone is not strong enough to hold the implant in place, you will need bone grafting treatment.

The Implant Placement

The implant placement is a surgical procedure which will require anaesthetic. You can choose whether you want local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic. All local anaesthetic cases will be treated at our practice in Southport. For GA cases, Dr Franck Page offers treatment at the Gold Coast Private Hospital.

The treatment itself will take between 45 and 75 minutes. The duration depends on your grafting needs and the complexity of your case. During this time, your dentist will place the implant into your jaw bone.

10 days later, you will come back for a review appointment so your dentist can check the healing process.

The Abutment & Prosthesis Placement

After a healing time of at least three months, your dentist will take impressions of the implant. The impressions will be sent to our laboratory where dental technicians fabricate your custom-made prosthesis. Depending on your case, this can be an implant crown or an implant bridge.

Approximately 10 days later, your dentist will place the abutment and your restoration to finalise your new smile.

Does my private health fund cover dental implants?

Yes, dental implant treatment is covered by most private health funds. Usually, dental implants fall under the major dental category of your dental extras cover. Make sure to check your policy and with your private health fund to see how much of the treatment you can claim.

How much can I claim back from my health fund?

The claimable amount depends on your health fund and on your policy. If you want to receive a detailed quote from your health fund, you will need to give them the item numbers for the treatment.

After your initial consultation at Dental Implants & Aesthetics, you will receive an itemised treatment plan. You can pass these numbers on to your health fund and they will be able to tell you how much you can claim. As well, they will advise you of how much your treatment gap will be.

Since there usually is a longer healing period between the surgery and the restoration, the treatment can be done over two calendar years. This may result in a greater rebate for you as you can claim the treatment over a two-year period.

Does Dental Implants & Aesthetics offer payment plans?

Yes, our practice offers three different payment plans for any type of dental treatment. For implants, however, you may want to consider the Zip Money plan as it covers treatments between $1,000 and $10,000. We also accept Afterpay and Zip Pay.

Afterpay splits your treatment costs (for all treatment below $1,000) into four fortnightly payments. These will automatically get deducted via direct debit. For example, if your treatment is $800, you would make four fortnightly repayments over a period of 8 weeks of $200 each.

Zip offers two different payment plan options – Zip Pay and Zip Money.

For payments below $1,000, Zip Pay is an interest-free plan.

Zip Money is for payments above $1,000 and below $10,000. This type of payment plan is interest free for 3 months.
