Oral Health Therapy

At Dental Implants & Aesthetics, our focus is on long-term oral health, preventative care, and evidence-based treatment. Oral Health Therapy plays a vital role in maintaining healthy gums, supporting periodontal stability, and assisting patients in ongoing care after restorative or implant treatment.

Our in-house Oral Health Therapists (OHTs) work closely with our dentists and our in-house Periodontist. Our OHT team provides thorough assessments, professional cleans, and individualised oral health guidance to help patients protect their natural teeth and maintain the longevity of their dental work—including dental implants, crowns, veneers, and full-arch restorations.

What is An Oral Health Therapist

An Oral Health Therapist is a university-trained dental practitioner with specialised skills in:

  • Periodontal care

  • Preventative dentistry

  • Diagnosis and treatment of gum disease within their scope

  • Oral hygiene education

  • Routine dental care for children and adolescents

OHTs bridge the gap between preventative care and advanced dental treatment, ensuring patients receive continuous support before, during, and after their dental procedures.

A Collaborative Approach to Your Oral Health

At DIA, our OHTs work closely with:

1. Our General and Restorative Dentists

OHTs assist in maintaining the long-term health of teeth and gums, especially important for patients undergoing:

  • Dental implants

  • Smile makeovers

  • Full-mouth rehabilitation

  • Porcelain veneers

  • Crown and bridgework

Regular OHT visits allow early detection of issues, contributing to stable and predictable outcomes.

2. Our In-House Periodontist

For patients with gum disease or complex periodontal concerns, our OHTs collaborate directly with our in-house Periodontist, Dr Georgios Papageorgakopoulos, to:

  • Monitor periodontal pockets

  • Track inflammation levels

  • Provide supportive periodontal therapy

  • Reinforce specialist treatment plans

This partnership ensures patients receive a consistent, structured pathway to achieve and maintain periodontal stability.

Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal Care:

Healthy gums are the foundation of every smile. Our OHT-led periodontal care includes:

  • Comprehensive Gum Assessments: Using periodontal charting and diagnostic tools, our OHTs evaluate gum health, identify early signs of gum disease, and monitor progression over time.
  • Professional Clean and Debridement: A tailored clean removes plaque and calculus buildup above and below the gum line, helping reduce inflammation and improve gum health.
  • Supportive Periodontal Therapy (SPT): For patients who have undergone advanced periodontal treatment (periodontitis/periodontal disease), ongoing supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) is essential for maintaining stability. Oral Health Therapists provide regular maintenance throughout the year in coordination with our Periodontist.
  • Education and Home Care Planning: Our OHTs offer personalised guidance on brushing techniques, interdental cleaning tools, antimicrobial rinses, and strategies to reduce the risk of gum disease recurrence.

For Dental Implants:

Maintaining dental implants requires specialised hygiene care. Our OHTs provide:

  • Implant-specific cleaning techniques

  • Peri-implant tissue assessments

  • Targeted removal of biofilm around implant components

  • Monitoring of soft tissue health and stability

This ongoing care is essential for reducing the risk of peri-implantitis and supporting the longevity of implant treatment.

General Oral Health Maintenance:

Whether you have natural teeth, restorations, or a combination of both, our OHTs support your everyday oral health through:

  • Routine Check-Ups and Professional Cleans: Regular visits help prevent decay, reduce inflammation, and protect both natural and restored teeth.
  • Fluoride Treatments (where clinically appropriate): Used to strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity.
  • Assessment for Decay and Early Intervention: Identifying issues early helps minimise the need for complex treatment.
  • Advice on Diet and Lifestyle Factors: Our team provides guidance to support oral health, including reducing acid exposure and managing dietary habits related to gum health.

Oral Health Therapy at DIA

Our Oral Health Therapists are here to guide you at every stage of your oral health journey, from routine maintenance to complex restorative cases. By working closely with our restorative dentists and in-house Periodontist, our OHT team ensures patients receive the highest standard of care throughout every phase of treatment.

Why Ongoing Care Matters?

Regular visits with an OHT offer long-term benefits, including:

  • Reduced risk of gum disease

  • Lower chance of implant complications

  • Better maintenance of porcelain restorations

  • Early detection of oral changes

  • Support for lifelong oral health

This preventative approach allows our clinical team to provide stable, predictable, and functional outcomes for every patient.

Yes. Our Oral Health Therapists provide routine oral health assessments, professional cleans, gum health monitoring, and personalised oral hygiene guidance.

A referral to our in-house Periodontist is recommended when gum disease is more advanced, significant bone loss is present, or deeper periodontal treatment is required beyond routine maintenance. Your OHT or dentist will guide you if specialist care is clinically indicated.

Dentists diagnose and manage a wide range of dental conditions and perform more complex restorative, surgical, and prosthetic treatments. Oral Health Therapists focus on gum health, preventative care, routine maintenance, and hygiene support.

Some Oral Health Therapists also have additional postgraduate training that allows them to treat adults (adult scope), including performing certain restorative treatments such as fillings.

Both practitioners work collaboratively to ensure patients receive comprehensive, well-coordinated oral health care.

Yes. OHTs are trained to provide implant-specific hygiene care, including gentle debridement around implant components, monitoring soft tissue health, and offering guidance to help prevent peri-implant disease.

Most patients benefit from a visit every 6 months, but individuals with gum disease, implants, or higher oral health needs may require more frequent care. Your OHT or dentist will recommend a personalised maintenance schedule.
