What Is All-on-X?

All-on-X is a state-of-the-art dental implant technique designed to replace all teeth in either the upper or lower arch using as few as four to six strategically placed dental implants. These implants act as a foundation for a custom-made prosthetic arch, providing a durable, natural-looking alternative to traditional dentures.

How All-on-X Provides Full-Arch Restoration

  1. Strategic Implant Placement:
The “X” in All-on-X refers to the customised number of implants placed based on individual needs, typically between four and six per arch. The posterior implants are often placed at an angle to maximize contact with available bone, offering greater stability.
  2. Prosthetic Arch Attachment:
After implant placement, a full-arch prosthetic is securely fixed onto the implants. This prosthetic is designed to mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth, restoring your ability to chew, speak, and smile confidently.

Advantages of All-on-X vs. Traditional Dentures

Aspect All-on-X Traditional Dentures
Stability Fixed and secure, with no slipping May shift or become loose over time
Bone Preservation Prevents jawbone loss by stimulating the bone Accelerates bone resorption due to lack of stimulation
Aesthetics Custom-made for a natural appearance May appear less natural
Comfort Feels more like natural teeth Can cause gum irritation or discomfort
Longevity Long-term solution with proper care Requires periodic replacement or relining

All-on-X provides a functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing solution for full-arch restoration, surpassing the limitations of traditional dentures.

All-on-X: What to Expect

Initial Consultation and Planning

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation, during which:

  • Your dentist or specialist will assess your oral health and take detailed 3D scans to evaluate bone density and structure.
  • A personalized treatment plan is developed, outlining the number of implants required and the design of your prosthetic arch.

This step ensures that your procedure is tailored to your unique needs and delivers optimal results.

Implant Placement and Final Restoration

  1. Surgical Placement of Implants:
The implants are strategically placed into the jawbone during a minimally invasive surgical procedure. In most cases, four to six implants are used to support a full arch.
  2. Temporary Prosthetic Attachment:
A temporary prosthetic arch may be attached immediately after the implants are placed, allowing you to leave with a functional and aesthetically pleasing smile on the same day.
  3. Healing and Osseointegration:
Over the next 3–6 months, the implants integrate with the jawbone, providing a strong foundation for the permanent prosthetic.
  4. Final Prosthetic Placement:
Once healing is complete, the temporary prosthetic is replaced with a custom-designed permanent arch, ensuring optimal comfort, functionality, and aesthetics.

FAQ’s

Most patients with significant tooth loss or severe dental issues are good candidates for All-on-X. However, adequate jawbone density is required to support the implants. Your dentist will evaluate your oral health through scans and examinations to determine your suitability for the procedure.

The treatment process for full arch rehabilitation, such as All-On-X, is generally takes 3-12 months from start to finish.

After the implants are placed, a healing period of 3 months is usually required for them to integrate with the jawbone. Once healed, the restorative phase and final restoration preparation can begin. Treatment particulars (bone grafting, sinus augmentations, staged treatment, etc.) will affect the treatment timeframe. This will all be discussed with you at your consultation and will be specific to your case.

Yes, you will have a set of temporary teeth within 24 hours of your implant placement. This is often referred to as “Immediate-load Implants.” These temporary teeth are ‘fixed’ and securely attached to the implants, allowing you to smile, speak, and function as normal while your implants heal and integrate with the jawbone.

After the healing period (typically 3–6 months), the temporary teeth are replaced with a custom-designed permanent prosthesis that offers optimal aesthetics, comfort, and functionality. Your dentist will guide you through this process and ensure a smooth transition from temporary to permanent teeth.

Patients with insufficient jawbone may still be candidates for All-on-X, thanks to advanced techniques such as angled implants or zygomatic implants. In some cases, bone grafting may be recommended to build up the bone.

All-on-X is designed for patients missing most or all teeth in an entire arch (upper or lower jaw, or both). It provides full-arch restoration with fewer implants (4-6).

Single implants, on the other hand, are ideal for replacing individual teeth. Both options are durable and practical but serve different purposes.

Coverage for All-On-X treatment depends on your health fund plan and your level of coverage for ‘major dental’.

Some plans may partially cover the procedure, while others may offer no coverage at all. Check with your health fund provider to fully understand your benefits, eligible rebates, and expected out-of-pocket expenses.
